Alan Singley & Pants Machine lovingkindness (Slow January)

Three extensive pieces make up this release by Portland, Oregon based sonic explorer Ethan Rose. Microscopic tide pool life forms flit and glitter as glitches and clicks, later calming to pops and slow glasslike chimes over a drifting dreaming swampy meadow. All acheived by taping up notes in a player piano roll, and removing notes from a music box of the songs Happy Birthday and Jingle Bells respectively, rendering both original melody lines indecipherable, but allowing for dreamlike meshings and moire patterns to emerge amidst Ethan’s masterful manipulations. It’s remarkable how much Ethan gets out of so little; like doing beautiful photographs with a pinhole camera.
